For a girl who says she doesn't care for jewelry, doesn't buy new clothes (except for new used ones from Buffalo Exchange), and doesn't care for trends, Jasmine has a lot of style. She's the kind of girl who you may see walking by and wonder how cool her life is.
Her laid back, yet pleasant attitude is one that can come off as intimidating. When I come across people I think are cool, I often get chatty thinking to myself, "Oh god, I must sound like the biggest loser." But relieving my anxiousness, Jasmines reveals that she's quite the bore.
"I like to come home, relax, and get on Tumblr," she replied when I asked what she likes to do for fun. She's a self described "classy boheme." A girl with modern vintage style and the quintessential homebody. I'd rather rummage through a thrift store looking for more gold nick knacks to add to my living room than head out to a party. I assume that Jasmine is the same kind of girl. Jasmine, who graduated from Philadelphia University with a Fashion Merchandising degree, just landed a position as Merchandiser with Sneaker Villa. It's fitting; hidden in her bookshelf are all type of sub-culture coffee table books.
She gives me a quick tour of her bedroom which is filled with African masks, gold framing, and hand-me-downs from relatives; she's pretty, "no big about it." She explains that her massive padded bed frame was a graduation gift because it was she wanted. Nothing more, nothing less. The vintage dresser and night table were thrift for about $7.00 or so. She talks a lot of about her grandparents. Her appreciation for them is mounted in various parts of her bedroom. "They basically raised me," she says as she shows me an old photo of them on her bookshelf.
Before my photographer and I leave, we get a few shots of some eye catching pieces. My eyes land on a quirky ram necklace. It's as subtle and as it is unique and I couldn't help but to think that the ram was Jasmine. Subtle was definitely the word, because boring people don't look like that.
